How to Install WP AI Agent on WordPress: Step-by-Step Guide

· · 5 min read

This guide walks you through installing WP AI Agent on your WordPress site from start to first conversation. The entire process takes under five minutes, and the free plan gives you 100,000 tokens per month — enough for regular site management — at no cost.

Prerequisites

Before installing, confirm your site meets these requirements:

  • WordPress 6.0 or higher — check under Dashboard → Updates
  • PHP 8.1 or higher — check under Tools → Site Health → Info → Server
  • Administrator access — you need to be logged in as an admin to install plugins
  • Active internet connection on the server — the plugin communicates with the AI backend

If your PHP version is below 8.1, contact your hosting provider. Most hosts allow upgrading PHP through the hosting control panel in a few clicks.

Step 1: Download the Plugin

WP AI Agent is distributed as a zip file. Download the latest version from your account page or directly from the plugin's distribution page. The zip file will be named wp-ai-agent-X.Y.Z.zip where X.Y.Z is the version number.

Do not unzip the file before uploading — WordPress installs plugins from the zip directly.

Step 2: Install the Plugin in WordPress

  1. Log into your WordPress admin dashboard.
  2. Navigate to Plugins → Add New Plugin.
  3. Click the Upload Plugin button at the top of the page.
  4. Click Choose File and select the wp-ai-agent-X.Y.Z.zip file you downloaded.
  5. Click Install Now.
  6. WordPress will upload and install the plugin. When it finishes, click Activate Plugin.

After activation, you will see a new "AI Agent" item in the left sidebar of your WordPress admin, and a sparkle icon (✦) will appear in the bottom-right corner of every admin page.

Step 3: Get Your Free License Key

WP AI Agent requires a license key to connect to the AI backend. The free plan gives you 100,000 tokens per month at no cost and no credit card required.

  1. Visit wpaiagent.io/register.
  2. Enter your name and email address.
  3. Click Get Free Key.
  4. Your license key will appear on screen immediately and be emailed to you.

The license key is a UUID in the format xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx. Keep a copy somewhere safe — if you lose it, you can resend it to your email from the registration page.

Step 4: Enter Your License Key in WordPress

  1. In your WordPress admin, click AI Agent in the left sidebar.
  2. Paste your license key into the License Key field.
  3. Click Save Settings.

After saving, the settings page will show a green confirmation banner with your account name and status. You will also see a token usage chart showing your current monthly usage against your quota.

Step 5: Have Your First Conversation

Click the sparkle icon (✦) in the bottom-right corner of any admin page to open the chat panel. Type a request and press Enter or click Send.

Here are some example prompts to try:

  • "What plugins are currently active on this site?"
  • "Create a draft post titled 'Welcome to our blog' with a brief introduction paragraph."
  • "What is the current WordPress version and PHP version?"
  • "List the 5 most recently published posts."

The AI will respond and, where the request requires action, show you what it did with a summary of any changes made.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

The sparkle icon does not appear

Ensure the plugin is activated under Plugins → Installed Plugins. If activated but the icon is still missing, clear your browser cache and reload the admin page.

"Could not verify license" error

Double-check that the license key is entered correctly with no extra spaces. The key should be in UUID format: xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx. If the error persists, your server may be blocking outbound connections — contact your hosting provider and ask them to whitelist the WP AI Agent backend URL.

Plugin fails to install — PHP version error

WP AI Agent requires PHP 8.1+. If WordPress shows a PHP version error during installation, upgrade PHP through your hosting control panel (most hosts provide this under PHP Configuration or Software in cPanel). After upgrading, retry the installation.

Slow responses from the AI

Response time depends on the complexity of the request and current server load. Simple queries respond in 2–5 seconds. Complex multi-step operations (e.g., creating a product with 10 variations) may take up to 90 seconds. If responses are consistently slow, check your server's outbound connection speed.

Next Steps

Once installed, explore what WP AI Agent can do for your specific workflow:

  • Content creators: Ask the agent to draft and schedule posts directly from the chat
  • WooCommerce store owners: Try creating a test product or querying recent orders
  • Developers: Explore WP-CLI execution by describing database or user operations

The free plan is sufficient for evaluating the plugin's full capabilities. Upgrade at any time from the pricing page if your workflow demands more tokens.
